As part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2019, the Ministry of Energy and Industry announced the development of the Federal Technical Policies and Standards for treated wastewater and reusing it.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Industry, Dr. Matar Hamed Al Neyadi, stressed the importance of water as one of the highest priority issues in the UAE due to the scarcity of natural water resources; the high demand for water and the reliance on non-traditional water resources, which has been clearly reflected in the UAE Vision 2021 and on its National Agenda. These various challenges have been translated into the development of the 2036 Water Security Strategy done by the Ministry of Energy and Industry in 2018.
H.E also stressed the importance of the development of available water resources, especially treated wastewater that is a reliable and growing strategic resource to cover the demand for water in many uses. Thus, reduce the pressure on groundwater resources and desalinated water, which increases the sustainability of the water sector and productivity, and reduces the level of scarcity natural water.
The project for the development of the technical policies and technical standards for treated wastewater and reusing it, in collaboration with the leading consulting firm Stantec UK Ltd., in full coordination with the Ministry's partners involved in the treated water sector, will contribute to the development of the Federal Technical Policies, regulations and standards for treated wastewater and for reusing it to diversify its uses in order to promote the sustainability and development of the water sector.
