H.E Dr Matar Al Neyadi “The UAE hosting of the 2019 World Energy Conference confirms its prominent global position”

The UAE will host in September 2019 the 24th World Energy Conference in Abu Dhabi under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, in the first time ever in the Middle East, which supports its status on the global energy map. This conference will be the first one ever of an OPEC member country has hosted this landmark world event, which began in 1924 and is held every three years; and is the oldest and most influential in the world, covering the various fields of energy and its development in the world.

This four-day event, entitled "Energy for Prosperity," is expected to attract more than 15,000 visitors, and be attended by a number of heads of states and governments, and some 70 ministers and 2,500 exhibitors, and this world event is one of the most important seasonal events in the world energy sector.

"The UAE is looking forward to the future with a realistic outlook, and believes that dialogue, exchange of experience and innovation is the way forward to the prospects of development, growth and prosperity," said Dr. Matar Al Neyadi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Industry and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 2019 World Energy Conference. “By bringing together energy sector players through the hosting of the conference, we will be able to enhance understanding on key issues affecting our lives and the future of our future generations ", he stated.

H.E added: “The country hosting of the World Energy Conference 2019, reveals the confidence of the world in the vision and wisdom of the UAE”.

“UAE is on the global energy map after diversifying its sources of energy. It produces electricity from a variety of sources that are compatible with the nature of the UAE and its natural resources, and its determination to achieve supply security, sustainable development and happiness for its citizens," he said.

"The conference covers many sectors including oil and gas, renewable energy, electricity generation, hydropower, electric vehicles, energy storage, nuclear power, infrastructure, networking technology, energy conservation, and technology and innovation. The conference is an opportunity and an ideal platform to review the opportunities and challenges of the energy sector in the world over the next decade; how to harness modern technologies to sustain the energy sector and create a balance between energy, water, food and climate change. This conference is an opportunity to highlight the industry in the energy sector and the large role of industry in this sector. » H.E explained.

For the UAE, the conference will enable stakeholders to highlight the achievements of UAE in the energy sector and related sectors, and reviewing the UAE's efforts to stimulate innovation and the future. UAE brings together a number of heads of states and energy ministers from around the world, as well as the world energy leaders and experts to discuss global energy issues and to highlight the future plans and policies of the country in this sector. "

H.E Dr. Matar Al Neyadi said: "The conference aims to encourage all energy industry players to innovate and shape the future of the energy industry in the world. It culminates in Abu Dhabi's growing role in the energy industry, its leadership of global renewable energy efforts, and the green economy research and sustainable energy. Furthermore, it creates a community dialogue on the importance of energy in the presence of players in the field of energy in the global arena, and presenting the most important innovations that provide energy solutions, so the impact of the World Energy Conference 2019 will be the same as the impact of Davos Conference on economic issues ».

He added: "Since the announcement of our hosting of the conference, preparations for the conference have not ceased, and in the coming months, the organizing committee will unveil a series of strategic companies to ensure that the conference and exhibition participants benefit from all issues related to energy and energy security."

H.E the Undersecretary said that the conference is an opportunity for all politicians and energy leaders to share ideas for the future of energy in the next decade. The link between energy, water, food and innovation will be present during all the days of the conference. He also explained that energy is the main driver of any economy. “Wherever energy is found, industry exists and production flourishes. In addition, wherever energy is found, the consumer markets have revived and the economy cycle has been completed. Countries seeking prosperity and prosperity for their people are always looking for energy sources to keep pace with the growing demand for energy to continue their development path”.

- Strategic issues

On the strategic importance of the topics to be addressed by the conference, H.E Dr. Matar Al Neyadi said: "Our leadership has realized that ensuring the sustainability of energy resources is a guarantee for the sustainability of the country's growth; and that moving forward in providing various sources of energy is the best way to ensure a bright future for its people, and to sustain the path of development and progress in light of the challenges faced by the world, which requires addressing them on the basis of on innovative principles and considerations to achieve the goals of sustainable development ».

The conference will be held from September 9-12, 2019 at the Abu Dhabi Exhibition Center. It will be attended by a number of heads of states, a number of heads of governments, 70 ministers, 4,000 official delegations, and more than 100 countries, 500 executive heads, 15,000 visitors, 3,000 member organizations, and 600 media representatives. H.E added that coordination is underway with the Department of Economic Development in Abu Dhabi to set a platform for registering energy companies wishing to open their branches in UAE. Some of the requests are from foreign energy companies desiring to open their offices in UAE. "The conference will address the future of the world's energy resources, While the second day is devoted to the executive heads of local, regional and global energy companies to present their views on the opportunities and challenges in the energy sector and their companies in this field, while the third day is a review of the policies developed by countries for the energy sector and the impact of technology Where it is. "

The Conference concludes with a review of innovation in the energy sector, the importance of R & D and investment opportunities in the energy sector, and the importance of youth in the energy sector. The conference will host the Energy Pioneers program and offers entry-level entry cards for students from around the world to encourage them to attend and actively participate Energy in Asia in collaboration with the World Energy Forum.

"The conference will see for the first time a meeting of the Asian Energy Ministers' Roundtable on 9-10 September, during which the cooperation between Asian countries in the energy sector will be discussed. The conference will be held on the sidelines of the conference and the exhibition accompanying a number of events in partnership with the Atlantic Council, HMS, the International Nuclear Energy Association, and the American AMT Institute.

- The Official carrier

H.E Dr. Matar Al Neyadi added that it has been agreed with Etihad Airways to be the official carrier of the World Energy Conference Abu Dhabi 2019, and last year there was another contract with E3 as the organizer of the conference. A public relations company was contracted also to promote and market the conference. The organizing company and the program manager of the conference was assigned to oversee the development of the program in coordination with the Organizing Committee and with the London Books, which is the owner of the conference.

The sponsors of this conference include ADNOC, Mubadala, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the Energy Department of Abu Dhabi, as well as other local and international sponsors. Korean KIPCO and the Kuwait National Oil Corporation also expressed interest in participating as sponsors and exhibitors of the conference.

H.E said that the conference is a global platform for enhancing cooperation between stakeholders in the energy sector and related sectors such as industry, water, food and climate change. He added that achieving sustainability requires balance between these sectors.

- Three countries compete to host the 2022 session

Three world cities are competing for the 25th World Energy Congress in 2022, including Houston, St. Petersburg and the Portuguese city of Lisbon advancing to the next round.

The winner of the 25th Conference will receive the theme of the conference on the final day of the World Energy Conference in Abu Dhabi. It is worth mentioning that this conference is held every 3 years since 1924. The voting the national committees of the member states, which are 90 countries, chooses the winning city.  Supervising the voting process and studying the nomination file are performed by the Secretariat of the World Energy Congress that is based in London.
